So let me warn you, this is not a critical review, this is coming from a person who is so smitten by Vidya Balan that I almost can't think straight. Even before I watched the movie I knew I wanted to like it, but as I was watching it I realised I so was not expecting to like it SO much.
Vidya Balan is BEAUTIFUL in the movie as Silk and and to me it was not her cleave or her thighs that made her as sexy and sensual as she is, it was her performance as an actress. She is completely at ease with her body and her sexuality. She has the power in the movie. Her sensuality was heightened by the ease with which she expressed her sexuality and the pleasure it gave her. The feeling of being in control and powerful were oozing out of her eyes and facial expressions.
No other woman could have given me warm fuzzies being all sensual on screen. She owns her sensuality and affirms it! Made the woman in me feel good!
This movie for me addresses several stereotypes about female sexuality:
The first one being that female sexuality is practically non-existant and so so taboo. Silk's sexuality is for her pleasure first and then for the spectators. She will kiss and dance and enjoy it so much that the spectator will enjoy it.
The second is that women who have relationships with multiple partners are sluts while the men remain as pure and noble as ever. This is brilliantly brought out in her relationship with Suryakanth (Nasiruddin Shah) and Ramakanth (Tusshar Kapoor). Suryakanth cannot tolerate her relationship with his brother Ramakanth while he himself is married and has had several affairs. Ramakanth asks her not to do any mischief when his parents are around and ends up dumping her because of her 'mischief'. The 'Aisi ladkiyonko bistar me le ja sakto hai Ghar me nahin'
dialogue is all too familiar for me. I have heard several friends - men
and women categorize women into 'girlfriend' material and 'wife'
material.

The third being the whole 'Be sexy for the chosen partner's (boyfriend/husband) eyes only' You dare not go about flaunting your sexuality 'attracting' other men's attention. Sexy in bed and 'Sathi Savitri' to the others! Ramakanth expects Silk to be 'good' in front of his parents while he only falls in 'love' with her because of her 'sexiness'. This is where the victim blaming comes from (and why I love the Slut walk) - if a man sexually assaulted or raped a woman it must have been cause the woman attracted it, God knows the man's so not to blame! Ugh!
The fourth is the modern idea that women have to be skinny size zero to be sexy/attractive that is driving so many young women world over to eating disorders. Silk looks gorgeous and gave my body image a nice boost. In fact I seriously doubt any other
actress could have done this role with as much magic as Vidya Balan did.
This blatant portrayal of female sexuality is answered in the film with all the condemnation and curses that is typically expected from a patriarchal society, where a woman's sexuality is non-existant for the most part and not acknowledged for the rest and it is supposed to be that way. The Hyderabad anti-obscenity protests and the courts order to book an obscenity case prove it. Despite Silk being as fiery as she is, she becomes isolated and depressed and is defeated at the hands of a patriarchal society that ostracizes her and names her 'dirty'.
The message of 'Dirt lies in the eyes of the beholder and not the woman or her 'revealing' clothes' is somehow transmitted just because Silk is the central focus of the movie. She is not just a dance number girl whose sole existence is resumed to eye candy, she is a person with feelings- love, hate, joy, anger, sadness, jealousy and a strong personality. She is who she is and how you react is only your problem!
Vidya Balan I am so so impressed! The Dirty Picture is definitely a Feminist movie because it raises feminist questions (it did in my mind!) and despite being about Silk's relationship with three other men still passes the Bechdel test!
What did you think?

I loved this letter to Vidya Balan in the Sunday Eye magazine Indian express.
Also read on Anatomy of a sex symbol about Marilyn Monroe by Joan's Digest which deals with the issue of her sexuality and patriarchal society, I first read it on Adios Barbie.

I couldn't agree more.
I was so turned on in the movie by just her remarkable acting. Simply superb.
Hours later, I can't remember the others in the movie as well as I remember her and her performance.
I am blown. and that indeed is her magic.
Love the post :D
Isn't it amusing media and viewers are singing paeans to the movie and the actress where as the actual protogonist was shunned and none is even talking about her.
Women's sexuality is demonized to an extent that even desi Gods fear it. If Gods ain't able to control T hormone what can we expect from poor mortal men.
Its been a very long time that DG watched same movie twice in two days. She gave art director full marks.
Peace,
Desi Girl
This film is definitely path breaking in many senses. However, that does not detract from the fact that it is not for the intention of breaking paths that this film has been made, but for breaking the box office. It is a poorly made film that has some of the best performances by some of the most talented actors of recent times (performances and actors, both). I also find the name of the film a reinforcement of the conditioning that we as a society suffer from. It is sad that the film had to be built around female sexuality not in order to celebrate it but to draw the crowds in. Would this film have worked if the protagonist had been depicted as a lesbian, for example? Just my opinion.
@ Srinidhi
It is Vidya Balan's movie through and through. Glad you like the post!
@GGTS
I didn't exactly grow up with Silk on the screen, I have hardly seen 2 movies with her actually. I think for many people younger than me Silk must be just a name they have heard. May be the movie will make some people look up her work and her life like I did.
But I wouldn't/didn't want to draw too many parallels between her life and the movie. After all you can't resume anybody's life in 2 hours and there's so much we didn't know about Silk.
But you are right about how little we spoke (ever) about Silk and how gaga we are over Vidya Balan in a role inspired by Silk.
I totally agree about women's sexuality being terribly feared in our societies!

Welcome here and thanks for your comment.
I guess girl on girl works even better to attract crowds than girl on boy action so if she was lesbian may be there could have been more crowds and even more protests!
Female sexuality for drawing crowds when the movie is about a sex goddess is celebrating it and it takes the slutty behaviour out of the bedroom which most men aren't comfortable with. Though I do agree that her emotional distress and downfall as a star could have been better explored in the movie.
I feel like accepting words such as dirty and slut as moods, everybody can have rather than types of personalities strips the word of the perceived 'dirty' judgement.
Therefore calling the movie dirty picture is bringing the word dirty into common vocabulary and bringing sexuality into common conversations which could do us 'stuck up about sex' Indians some good I think!
There is an indecent representation of women (prohibition) act?? What a bloddy joke! What does it do, stop women from looking 'obscene'? Why can't they just enforce an act to make us stop thinking and being!! That link on what the Hyd court did is really shocking! I haven't seen the movie yet but it goes in my must-watch list.
@BLD
isn't it annoying!! They now have actually filed a case against Vidya Balan. Yes tell us how to dress, how to eat, how to smile, how to express, how to be!
Why can't people get it! I have the right to not be leered at even if I am naked!
Thanks for your comment :-)
I absolutely loved Vidya in the movie. Its fantastic to watch a woman so absolutely comfortable in her skin!!
So often we are told that being sexual is to be supressed, I dont know how it is suddenly supposed to come out in the bedroom?
Vidhya Balan has a lot of guts to act the way she did! Hats off to her.
The line "Aisi ladkiyonko bistar me le ja sakto hai Ghar me nahin".. The balls of men who say this should be kicked! People expect women to be all decent while men can go about eyeing and doing whatever they want to!
I loved the post! :)
I agree with everything, but didn't like the fact that she wore a red sari in the end. Not sure why that was done...
And I loved this post, made me think and take a fresh look at the movie.
@IHM Excellent point about the red saree, the whole suhagan get up. For some reason the first time i watched the movie i was immune to the red saree blunder but the second time i watched it, i was really dissappointed by it. I tweeted it too. I wonder if it was ekta kapoor letting herself go?! Totally agree on this point!
And it's great to see an Indian movie that passed the Bechdel Test
This Link reminded me so much of this movie.

@Kamagra
Welcome here. Thank you for your comment. Glad you liked it.
Great blog! I just watched the film yesterday and am also crushing on Balan, never mind that I'm a heterosexual woman! I really wish, though, that they'd fictionalized Silk Smitha's story a step further and let the woman live! I wouldn't have minded something a bit like the female vengeance movies of the 80s! It was kind of depressing to see her succumb like that.
@Asavari
Welcome here! Glad you liked it!
It was sad to see her go and the whole suhagan get up was so annoying! But overall great movie experience.
