Why am I a Feminist?

Source- On your Mark Research

 I am so tired of people using 'Feminist' like an insult or demonising Feminists as men haters. Some people (most people) say "I believe in gender equality but I am not a feminist" which clearly shows the image Feminism has.

  I say I believe in equality for all irrespective of origin, gender identity, skin-colour, sexual identity, religion and I am a Feminist.

So what is Feminism?

Wikipedia - "Feminism is a collection of movements aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights and equal opportunities for women."
Oxford Dicionary 'The advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes'

So here is Why I am a Feminist : -

1. I believe women should have voting rights and the right to drive their cars (yes some women can't)

2. I believe that a woman's right to choosing a career or being a stay home parent are as important as that of their fathers, brothers, male partners.

3. I believe working women should have the same salary as their male counterparts.

4. I believe the streets should be safe from sexual harassment and abuse for women irrespective of the time of the day or her attire

5. I believe women should have the right to choose contraception or not, the right to choose amongst different methods, the right to abortion, health care during pregnancy, etc irrespective of her marital status - in brief reproductive rights

6. I believe that women should not have to tolerate emotional blackmail and/or physical violence from their partner

7. I believe that women should not be burned/tortured because they could not bring enough dowry

8. I believe that her parents should not even have to give dowry

9. I believe that young girls have the same right to education as young boys

10. I believe that widowed and divorced women should not be stigmatised or marginalised, nor men

11. I believe that vaginal incision and female genital mutilation, supposedly for increasing sexual pleasure or tradition or whatever other reason is inhuman

12. I believe that female infanticide must come to an end

If you nodded in agreement to all my statements or even if you agreed with 10 (10 = you need to read some more about the issues you answered 'No' to), then you are a Feminist silly!
Embrace it! The cause needs as many women and men to accept it so we can stop thinking of 'Feminist' as an insult and hope for a gender equal society.

Here is an idea of why some of us might think being a feminist is being a man hater when it is SO NOT!
Feminist Frequency completed her kickass, Tropes vs Women series - Representations of women in Hollywood films and TV shows.  Her last video the Straw Feminist deals with what she calls the Straw Feminist trope:
"It is a deliberately created, exaggerated caricature of a feminist that is used to undermine and ridicule feminist movements."

By the way if you are a woman and you can vote, go to school and college, use contraception, work and have a women's room in your workplace -  you have feminists who lead the way in the past to Thank and today's feminists as well, these rights are not exercised by a lot of women even today. Oh! Feminism has no gender, people with all gender identities can be and are feminists.

If you are still not convinced or want to understand better, then here are some pointers to help further. 5 Ways to Diss Feminism on Women's Web by Aparna founder, writer Women's Web.

I have a mixed opinion on feminists. I am a feminist but I pick and choose my fights, if there is a left right center wing in this arena, I am on the left then! I am all for women fighting for the serious, genuine issues such as, why men should wear condoms and women not be pushed to abortions, pills! I am all for what Turlington does for *every mother counts*, i am all for women empowerment!

But, I hate when they do those stupid slut walks and showcase that all we got is boobs and we not afraid to show! I take pride in breasts, I talk about boobs openly, tweet about boobs so much that men think I am not a woman, but self defense is the way to go that walking like a nincampoop!

:D

See you around, grabbing the feed of your blog.

Welcome here Blunt Blogger.

Thanks for the comment.

I just read your post on feminists and Madamoiselle/Madame.

I too choose my fights.

I was/am for the slut walk, I am not going to defend it here.

But I believe different perspectives are important at least for me to question what I think and believe.

I don't believe there is any absolute answer.

And Self Defence is definitely the way to go, I don't see any options there.

Hi there!

I am feminist myself. So I can know what it means when you say feminism has acquired bad image. But I won't blame others entirely for this happening. This is also because of some upper-class feminists who find it more important to fight and secure extra women-only-locals,than to galvanize the same force for more humble causes like abortion and female infanticide. It is but natural that when a sincere voice emerges,it is seen under whole lot of suspicion.

Also I don't feel any urgency to explain why I am a feminist to anyone. Honesty stands alone but it is bound to be recognized sooner or later.

But at the same time I appreciate your sincere efforts to bring the issue in the main stream. There are really less bloggers who commit themselves to social callings-hence you deserve the praise.

Thanks to Blunt Blog-I came to know about your blog. Best wishes.

I checked all!! :D :d Awesome! :D

But I knew I was a feminist. :)

Well compiled post. :) I think fighting for equal rights should be a struggle we all undertook. :)

I am glad to be allowed to voice my opinions in a space (however small) for now. I hope to fight and stand up for equal rights to all genders and sexual preferences.

KUDOS to you :)

@ Rohan,
Welcome here. Thank You for reading and thanks for your balanced comment.

I am not blaming anybody, here just the negative image. I am not sure why the image exists and my post is my way of giving those people who view feminism as negative some points to ponder.

Those feminists who equate feminism to man hating and woman-only locals to me are not feminists. My opinion!

I work with gender and sexual identities with adolescents and I try to create debate about a gender equal society, I felt the need not so much to say I am a feminist, but contribute to a gender equal future.

Really appreciate your comment :-)

@Srinidhi

Not surprised you checked all babe!

Even and especially little things you do in your own life will eventually lead to a gender equal society. Every drop counts.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Brilliant beyond brilliant post prathm!!!
I have been MIA lately, because I've been so preoccupied with some personal stuff, but I'm so glad I could come and take a look at this post.... :-)
I couldn't agree more with each and every word.
I too get super irritated with feminists being painted as bra-burning, man hating semi lesbians all the time...my favorite quote on feminism is :

"Feminism is the radical notion that women are people. ~Cheris Kramarae and Paula Treichler"

Anyway I don't need to say much more, you've said it all, and there's nothing to add...:-)

You won't believe this but I have a post about why people seem to think feminists are man-haters sitting in my drafts. I agree with all you have said and find it quite disheartening when women say they are all for equal opportunity but not feminists. Somewhere along the line, feminism got equated with man-haters. But IMHO it's also about equality for men...for instance, not just maternity leave for new mums, but there should be paternal leave for dads too. Great post Prathama!

@AAD
Thanks for all the encouragement.

I feel like I didn't do justice to the smaller battles of Feminism.
But I am glad you liked it so much :-D
Come whenever you have the time -I too have days when I binge on blogs and days when I fast :-)

@Psych Babbler
Looking forward to reading what you were going to say on the subject. It had been sitting in my drafts for a while as well, till I could decide how best to articulate without chasing away the F word agnostics with my anger.

Yes equality of the sexes, that's all I ask.

I agree with all the points you enlisted. But, am I a 'Feminist' going by that assessment? May be yes... may be no...

Do I want myself to be 'tagged' as one? Doesn't matter! Feminist or not! MCP or not! How does it matter??

All I want to be is a good person who treats others well and wants to be treated well.

Call me whatever you want - I'll always be on the just side - if not at least I'll try to be on the just side!!

@Abu
Welcome Here. Thanks for your comment and your perspective.

Sometimes, names such as feminist are like an acronym for certain beliefs. Feminism is a global movement and people who adhere to it are Feminists, that's my perspective.

Sometimes for me finding the just side to a situation is complex, but I try as well.

Thanks again.

Towards Harmony said...

@Abu

Oh! and if you agree with all the points I enlisted, for me you believe in gender equality and that's feminism.
Gender equality = Feminism

Thanks again!

i loved the post - people often call me a feminist too in a way like I should feel embarrassed about it - the meanings associated with feminism have changed over time - but when people ask me if I am a feminist, I retort with what I read a while ago - If you think considering women as human beings is feminism - I am a feminist....

D!! said...

I am a Feminist!! I think everyone should be! It seems such an obvious choice!

I have actually been called a feminist in the same demeaning tone as Male chauvinist!

Towards Harmony said...

@Yuvika,

I have had similar experiences too. Glad you liked it.

@D!
So agree that it is an obvious choice. Yet something about the title Feminism bothers people.

Exactly - Feminist seems to be used as the female version of MCP you are so right!
