Carapace

Resilience is the property of a material to absorb energy when it is deformed elastically and then, upon unloading to have this energy recovered. Resilience in Human beings is similar. It is the positive capacity of people to cope with stress and catastrophe. "Resilience" corresponds to cumulative "protective factors". (Definitions Courtesy Wikipedia)

Resilience helps you deal with stress, helps you resist a breakdown when things get too tough, helps you bounce back out of difficult situations helps you stay sane when away from loved ones. Resilience is the back bone of your well being! Everybody must have their own secret resilience device, something that helps you when you get the blues. Here's how I view mine.

I call my resilience device my carapace, my imaginary mobile home. I can slide into its comfort whenever something pokes too hard or threatens my homeostasis.

This carapace is a collage of images, feelings carefully picked to make up this protective shell:

Long rides on long winding roads, never ending talks on balconies, hugs that rejuvenate, smiles that heal, walks on sunny, rainy or winter days, sweet smelling hot showers, discovering a new city, long walks on beaches, starry nights in the mountains, beautiful villages in faraway regions, the arms of my sweetheart, the warmth of my mother, the love of my sisters and girlfriends, drives that seem to never end, the wisdom of my father, vague memories of good friends once made but now left behind, the nostalgia of good times spent in company of good friends

As years go by I add newer images and older ones that come to me.. I seal them onto my carapace with all the love and affection these memories represent and its ready to protect me when the weather seems stormy!

Come share what makes yours blues go away!

I love. It made me go to my "happy place".

The strength my sisters radiate.
The patience of my mother and the rock like stance of daddy.
The love and warmth of my love lay!
The smell of good food and coffee :)
The taste of happiness when all these are combined is truly my happiest place!
Love you to bits. :)
You are my sturdy pillar. :*

Its almost two months before i got around to reading this post, but how i love it! While I have wonderful memories to go to when I pushed into a corner, I dont find myself going there. I think tough times makes it harder for me to go to happy memories but instead I actually reach out to physical realities that ground me, like talk to my folks, a few friends and my husband. So more than memories of going back to a happier place it is creating moments that can center me.

Thanks for the post P! I loved the thinking through this.
